All the signs indeed looked good. And our troops going back up the line were in great good heart. And the wounded boys coming back give us new heart. Smiling faces – bright smiles for us. ‘Guess the old infantry were in grand form smashing the Hun from his never-tobe-taken fortifications in France and Belgium.’ Our day had come – so the PBI should surely know.

We were winning – winning – winning all along the line.

The Hun was on the run. And on the run we would keep him. Old folks were already drifting back looking for old home towns, old homesteads that did not exist; the hell of the invader had ground them to dust long, long ago. In my heart I knew and felt the end of this Hell’s kitchen was almost in sight.

My thoughts? Hard to fathom even by myself. A terrific desire to get back to my beloved Royal Irish Rifles to lend a final hand in clearing the enemy out and get a little of my own back – revenge? Yet I knew I would have been of very little use in this and resigned myself to the duties on hand and worked as I never worked before. I spared no effort morning, noon or night to further the cause.

And I did not spare my Chinese boys.
